Country Garden makeover, Swalcliffe

Country Garden makeover, Swalcliffe

Introduction

Banbury Gardeners are commissioned to create a country garden makeover to this rural cottage garden in North Oxfordshire close to the village of Swalcliffe near Banbury. A beautiful tranquil garden enclosed by stone walling with an enchanting peacefulness looking out to the countryside beyond.

Garden Brief

Primarily to create new planting schemes throughout the garden borders with specific areas of  interest. The garden being walled is quite private but does have shaded areas where Betula (Silver Birch) and Prunus (Cherries) cast a degree of shade. This can be problematic when deciding upon plants to use in these areas. The garden has been maintained in the past by ‘so called gardeners’  who have no understanding of plants, the botanical naming and often what they look like which is dreadful shame and have needlessly hacked them or pulled them up as weeds.  The owners are wanting a garden that provides colour through the seasons with the main emphasis being of a cottage garden feel. The importance of providing landing pads of flowers for pollinating bees and other insects plays a role aswell as attracting native birds. New areas to be created with some further hard landscaping using Indian sandstone paving for continuity as used elsewhere in the garden. Primarily this will be plant orientated garden providing an ecologically safe habitat for nature aswell as a rich tapestry of colourful planting through the seasons.

The planting ideas

Focusing on a cottage style planting scheme and plants that can cope with dry and moist shade, the use of fragrance to waft around the garden in summer and the evening hours. A bespoke colour scheme using blues, purples, peachy pinks and scented foliage plants. Ground cover plants with the use of Cranesbill geraniums, Salvias, Lavenders, Iris, Hostas and Astrantias but also some distinctive shrub planting to create back bone interest a majority of the year. Climbing roses and clematis will adorn walls and trellis work areas and highlighted areas will include a corner patio with shade loving Japanese maples with seating to escape the harsh sun rays in summer. Garden works to commence in February 2018 and we will provide an update later in 2018 once the garden has been finished with further catch up later in its first flowering season.

Maintenance

The garden will be maintained by Banbury Gardeners looking primarily after the garden planting. The lawn treatments have already begun by Banbury Lawncare having had a moss kill and a multiple scarification to remove the dead moss and thatch. A top dressing and over-seeding has already been completed and the lawn has rejuvenated once again. A visit every 11 weeks provides a Feed and Weed treatment to the lawn and is a bespoke treatment tailored to the lawns previaling conditions cast by the shade of the existing garden trees.
