Now Spring has truly arrived despite a bit of a cold patch we are going through as I write this blog post, Summer is fast approaching and its time to get out those green fingers and get to work on those gardens. We’ve listed together some of the top garden trends of Summer 2019…
Grow Your Own Fruit and Vegetables
Grow Your Own fruit & veg has always been popular but not as many new gardeners know how easy it can be to grow tasty fruit and legumes. With the rise of veganism, and slightly warming springs and summers in the UK, we are all turning our attention to growing more exotic fruits in our own gardens, balconies, and patios. Growing fruit is easy as you don’t need as much space and can often pick the fruit straight from the tree or plant when you recognize its ready for harvest. Fruit can be eaten without being cooked, on its own and is enjoyed by children, something we can’t always say about our sprouts or leeks! Growing fruit and veg alongside with flowers in raised beds means the soil warms up quickly so early crops can be sown. We call this Companion planting. Beneficial insects all in one place.
Hot tip: Plant French or African Marigolds close to Cabbages as they help deter whitefly.
Big and Bold
Many landscape designers predict bold shapes, clashing colors and the introduction of large-leaved plants for 2019. Add bedding plants to bright colored planters. Pompon Dahlias, Canna, Bananas, Blue Honeywort, Korchia Ball and Giant Allium Flowers take center stage. The team at Banbury Gardens are more than happy to help with our plant sourcing service we have a wealth of nurseries where we can get hold of unusual or hard to find plants. Get in touch with us today!
Hot Tip: Look at flowers for the garden ideal for Cutting to add to a vase in the house. Sweet Peas are easy to grow and the more you cut the more they flower. The fragrance is irresistible!
Topiary will be making a massive come back this year. The age-old art of training and trimming evergreen plants is now back in fashion with new modern styles and twists on the classic shapes. Cubes, Spirals, Lollipops, Balls and Pyramids and if you’re looking for something a bit more exotic then Topiary F1 cars. Dolphins jumping through rings and African Animals including Giraffes and Elephants come will soon be seen around UK gardens!
Evergreen topiary comes alive in the winter months and will add depth and texture to your garden all year round. Box, yew, and holly all provide a great base layer. Evergreen and deciduous shrubs can be trained too including hedges on stilts if you want privacy to block out overlooking windows Traditional topiary hedging is ideal for outlining an area in your garden as it provides strong horizontal lines and will look great against the shape of your lawn or seating area.
Hot Tip: Trim Topiary ideally in September and give the plants good water the night before in order to cope with the stress of the clip, then water straight after pruning.
Transform your Patio
Look outside… Are you happy with your garden area? Is it somewhere you spend time and if so, why not? This is one of the best things you can do to improve your home in 2019. Create an outdoor living space where you can spend time and relax with friends, family and loved ones. Now is a great time to think about repairing, refurbishing or replacing your patio area in preparation for the springtime and summer months. Entertaining spaces are very much in vogue with All weather outdoor kitchens making great advances in design and function. Garden lighting is essential for after dark interest around patios and planting. Solar is great but LED lighting is even better.
Hot Tip: When pointing up paving look at Resin based products as this is harder wearing and will not damage quite as easily with a power washer once a season
If you are happy with the back of your home, you might prefer to have your driveway replaced at the front of your house. This can change the whole dynamic of your home as you come and go each day and can also increase the value of your property if you ever want to sell in the future. We have teams in Banbury and Brackley that can provide a hard landscaping service. We can guide you through all the options including FREE paving samples in your own home to view at a time convenient to you.
Hot Tip: Avoid using a Jet washer on your Block Paving as it will remove the jointing sand. Keep block paving swept and Weed free
Keep it Low maintenance with Artificial Grass
Artificial grass is a low maintenance surface alternative to the real thing. Artificial grass is the perfect solution for those property owners looking for low maintenance options; as it is now a leading option that must customers desire when they are
looking at there outside space. Low maintenance options allow homeowners to have a garden which looks good all year round! No mess no Mud. It does require an annual maintenance visit but compared to the real thing it’s very much here to stay.
Hot Tip: Keep your artificial grass free from leaves and debris, should any weeds develop then remove at once. A good brush with a stiff broom to lift the pile once a year is also a good idea. A power brush is even better and re-sanding maybe necessary.

Cottage Gardens still in demand
The Cottage garden style is still in demand. Even the smallest gardens can pack a punch full of color. Roses around the door and large billowing borders of herbaceous perennials filled with the traditional Cottage garden favorites like Foxgloves, Lupins, Delphiniums, Hollyhocks, and Phlox. Sweet peas are easy to grow and the fragrance emitted by the Spencer hybrids are really worthy of a place in the garden.
