Stone Garden Shed Restoration, South Newington, Banbury

Stone Garden Shed Restoration, South Newington, Banbury

Introduction

Banbury Gardeners maintain this garden on a regular basis in the village of South Newington near Bloxham has been undergoing a series of mini garden makeovers to make it more attractive. We provide a full garden maintenance service to include mowing, lawn treatments, and border planting works. Within the garden lay, this old stone shed that was not getting a great lot of use and the owners felt it would be good to make use of it as an additional storage space rather than demolish it and harvest the stone for other use.

The Story so far

A gem of a garden building to have within the garden this building was slowly rotting away and the mortar crumbling. A corrugated roof just managed to keep the weather at bay but even that was beginning to struggle with the weight of the ivy growing upon it. With careful time and attention, the shed has now been restored into a more substantial and useful space. The interior and exterior walls were repointed with a lime mortar. Although the shed never had a proper concrete foundation base this has been addressed where possible as it lies on the boundary with a neighboring property. A new concrete screed floor was installed along with a new roof tiled with beautiful cedar shingles, a new double window and and ledged and braced door. The door will be treated in due course.

New Planting to Soften

Once the building works were completed and the addition of rainwater goods was added the shed has now benefitted from having new raised beds in local stone created. These will be planted with Old English roses and some Cottage garden favorites in order to help this building re-establish itself as a character feature within this cottage garden. Aubretia and Campanula will play a great part in order to soften the stonework, the use of Clematis and a miniature climbing rose against the stone shed will provide color and interest to maintain the Cottage garden feel.
